Narni is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Terni in the Italian region Umbria, located about 60 kilometers (37 mi) southwest of Perugia and about 10 kilometers (6 mi) northwest of Terni.
Narni is a hill town of ancient origin, whose territory was inhabited since the Neolithic age. The town was originally an Umbrian settlement, later conquered by the Romans in the 4th century BC. Narni became a municipium in 90 BC and was a flourishing town during the Roman Empire.
In the Middle Ages, Narni was an important member of the Lombard League and was later ruled by the Guelphs and Ghibellines. The town was sacked by the troops of Frederick Barbarossa in 1155 and by those of Charles of Anjou in 1265.
