ABOUT THE AREA
Nungwi is a village at the northern end of the Tanzanian island of Unguja, familiarly called Zanzibar. It’s known for the wide, palm-lined Nungwi Beach and a nearby boat-building yard for the production of traditional dhows. The Mnarani Marine Turtle Conservation Pond shelters green and hawksbill sea turtles in a tidal lagoon. Off the coast, coral reefs teeming with colorful fish include Hunga and Leven Bank.
Nungwi is the second-largest settlement, after Stone Town on Zanzibar’s main island Unguja. Nungwi’s perched on the fence that separates old and new. It’s set at Zanzibar’s most northerly point, and cut its teeth as a fishing village before cottoning on to tourist demand. That said, it’s no urban metropolis. Traditional wooden boats still cast off from the waterfront to raid the Indian Ocean’s supply of fish, while swanky hotels watch on from prime plots along the shoreline. It’s also home to one of the island’s oldest buildings – the century-old Ras Nungwi Lighthouse – which rises up above the greenery.
Once a hub for dhow building, Nungwi straddles the line between modernity and tradition. Although the tourism industry has significantly developed the area, you can still watch the dhow boats cast off for a night of deep-sea fishing. The clear blue waters are beautifully calm, thanks in part to its tip-of-the-island location, where the changing of tides is less dramatic than some other islands.
Nungwi is a tourist hotspot due to its prime location on the main island, exquisite beauty, activities and accommodation to suit all budgets. Zanzibar is a Tanzanian archipelago off the coast of East Africa. On its main island, Unguja, familiarly called Zanzibar, is Stone Town, a historic trade center with Swahili and Islamic influences.
