In the past, Santa Maria di Leuca was divided between two municipalities. Indeed,  the Sanctuary of Santa Maria de Finibus Terrae belonged to Gagliano. While all the area between Punta Ristola and Punta Meliso, belonged to Castrignano del Capo. Nowadays, Santa Maria di Leuca falls entirely in the municipality of Castrignano del Capo. More precisely, Santa Maria di Leuca is the area above the promontory on which the Basilica and the lighthouse are located (one of the most important in Italy, beacuse it reaches 48.60 meters height, since it is situated at 102 meters above sea level). The seaside resort of Leuca, instead, is located lower and is between Punta Mèliso to the east, at the bottom of the promontory, and Punta Ristola to the west, the extreme southern edge of Salento.

According to a nautical convention, Punta Mèliso is the point of separation between the Adriatic coast (to the east) and the Ionian coast (to the west). In fact, the official, as well as natural and historical, border between the two seas is given by the Strait of Otranto, that is the strait between the easternmost point of Italy (Punta Palascia) and Capo Linguetta in Albania.

Since October 2006 the territory of Santa Maria di Leuca is part of the Park Costa Otranto - Santa Maria di Leuca and Bosco di Tricase established by the Apulia region. The aim of the Park is that of safeguarding the east coast of Salento, rich in valuable architectural assets and important animal and vegetable species.

A famous legend says that Santa Maria di Leuca (or perhaps Porto Badisco) would have been the first landing place of Aeneas. Then, Saint Peter would arrive here from Palestine, and began his work of evangelization up to Rome. The passage of Saint Peter is also celebrated by the Corinthian column of 1694 erected on the Basilica square.  A staircase of 296 steps connects the Basilica to the underlying harbour, setting the monumental waterfall of the Apulian Aqueduct that, ending in Leuca, flows into the sea.

In Leuca there is one of the various Italian Air Force headquarters, which makes daily weather forecasts.

Leuca is a famous tourist resort above all for the nineteenth-century villas, built according to various styles for the most part by the architects Ruggeri and Rossi.

Towards the end of the 19th century there were 43 villas, many of which today are in disuse or appear deeply transformed compared to the past.
