Santa Maria di Leuca has a precise origin of its name. "Leuca" was given by the ancient Greek sailors who came from the East, because they saw this place lit by the sun and therefore leukos, which means white. The remainder of the name originates in the tradition of the landing of S. Pietro from Palestine: from numerous testimonies showed that here has begun its process of evangelization, also changing the name of the town and dedicated it to the Virgin. The name by which it is often also associated, "De Finibus Terrae" was inspired by the Romans.
In the past it was administratively divided between the municipality of Gagliano, for the part where there is the Sanctuary of Santa Maria de Finibus Terrae, and the municipality of Cape Castrignano, for the part between the tip Ristola and Punta Meliso. The legal matter between the towns of Castrignano Cape and Gagliano del Capo, which ended after 83 years, has determined that Leuca lies entirely in the municipality of Cape Castrignano. More precisely, it means the area above the promontory of Leuca to Santa Maria on which there are the Basilica and the lighthouse (which with its height of 48.60 meters and its location at 102 meters above sea level is one of the most important in Italy), while the Marina di Leuca is located lower and is between tip Meliso east, at the foot of the promontory, and points west Ristola, extreme southern tip of Salento.
A tip Meliso is placed, according to a nautical convention, the point of separation between the Adriatic coast (east) and the Ionian coast (west). In fact, the official boundary, as well as natural and historical, between the two seas is given by the Strait of Otranto, which is the narrow sea between the easternmost point of Italy (Punta Palascia) and Head Tab in Albania.
Pearl of the extreme strip of Italy, lies in a stretch of coast alternate with cliffs and small sandy coves. The numerous caves are of great historical and natural interest and the seabed is a real paradise for underwater tourism. The ravines of the coast are mostly accessible by boat and artifacts found have testified the human presence since the Palaeolithic.
Since October 2006, the territory of Santa Maria di Leuca is part of the Costa Park Otranto - Santa Maria di Leuca and Tricase Forest, established by the Puglia Region in order to safeguard the east coast of Salento, rich in precious architectural monuments and important species of animals and plant.
The distance from Castrignano del Capo to Brindisi Airport is route 130 km and Lecce is 90 km.
