History of the Hermitage over the centuries
The Monastry has a centuries-old history. It was realized in the twelfth century, a hundred meters above the sea level with the delicately frescoed Church, where they use to practisse the Byzantine rite. Then, it was conducted by Basilian monks until it became a commandery of the curia of Gallipoli. Thus, it passed from hand to hand until the last commendatory, in 1735. He was noble prelate named Carlo ab al Altan. Its coat of arms is still present today on the wall of the Church itself. Around the sixteenth century. after the invasions of the Saracens in Otranto, inhabitants decided that to protect the coast would building sighting tower. Thus, the already existing tower, adjacent to the Casale and now an integral part of the House, was fortified. In the following centuries, the structure was managed, in alternating phases, by other owners. Until 1870, when the Church of Rome, after the "Breccia di Porta Pia", ceded temporal power.
