The city of Gallipoli is 37 kilometers from Lecce and 91 kilometers from the Salento Airport, in Brindisi.

The name of the city of Gallipoli comes from "Kale polis", a name imposed by the Hellenic colonizers coming from Greece, whose meaning is "beautiful city". Bathed by the Ionian Sea, it rises on the western coast of the Salento peninsula, in the Gulf of Taranto. The city of Gallipoli is divided into two areas: the "old city" and the "new village". The charming old town, rich in ancient buildings and frescoes, is located on a limestone island connected to the mainland by a seventeenth-century masonry bridge.

The city walls, that surround the entire island, were built in round 1500. From there, you can enjoy a fantastic scenery. Looking north you can see a part of the Neretine coast, while to the south you can see the Green Bay. In this area there are many beaches where you can have fun and dance on the beach. Crossing the bridge, we immediately encounter the last bulwark of an ancient past, the Greco-Roman fountain,  considered the oldest fountain in Italy, but it is now certain that it dates back to the early Renaissance. Behind the Greek Fountain, we find La Chiesa del Canneto. Built between the end of the thirteenth century and the beginning of the fourteenth century this church has always been called the "fishermen’s church", because it welcomes their prayers before embarking to go fishing. And often the same fishermen lay out or fix the nets and prepare the hooks right in front of the building.

The Festa Padronale (religious festival) of Gallipoli is Santa Cristina which is celebrated from July 23 to July 25, co-host together with Sant'Agata, of the City of Gallipoli. The festivities are characterized by the beautiful illuminations for the whole Corso Roma called "the villa" and for the "Cuccagna a mare" in the bosom of the reeds in the midst of an exultant crowd. La Cuccagna is a competition between young athletes who have to climb a vertical pole, greased, placed in the bow of a fishing boat. The target is a tricolor flag placed at the end.
